Preventive Dentistry — Frisco TX
The Best Dental Care Is the Kind That Prevents Problems Before They Start
Cavities don’t announce themselves. Gum disease develops silently for months before it becomes painful. The early signs of oral cancer are easy to miss without a trained eye. Preventive dentistry is how we catch these things while they’re still small — when a simple filling or brief treatment is all that’s needed, rather than a root canal, extraction, or surgery.
At Tribute Family Dentistry, routine preventive care is the foundation of everything we do. We see patients of all ages — from toddlers to seniors — from The Tribute, Lone Star Ranch, Phillips Creek Ranch, Frisco Lakes, The Colony, and Little Elm.
What Happens at a Preventive Visit
Our hygienists remove plaque and tartar buildup that your toothbrush and floss simply cannot reach — particularly below the gumline and between tight contact points. The polishing step removes surface staining and leaves your teeth feeling smooth and fresh.
Our dentists evaluate every tooth, all existing restorations, gum tissue, bite, and jaw function. We look for decay, cracks, signs of grinding, early gum disease, and any other changes since your last visit.
Digital radiographs reveal cavities between teeth, bone levels around roots, infections at the tips of roots, and developing issues that are completely invisible during a visual exam. We take X-rays as clinically indicated — typically annually for most patients.
We measure gum pocket depths around each tooth to detect early signs of gum disease. Caught early, gingivitis is fully reversible with a professional cleaning and improved home care. Left unchecked, it progresses to periodontitis — the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.
We examine the soft tissues of the mouth, throat, and neck for any abnormal lesions or changes at every routine visit. Early detection dramatically improves outcomes — oral cancer is highly treatable when caught at an early stage.
We discuss what we found, what — if anything — needs attention, and specific home care recommendations tailored to your teeth and habits. No generic advice — guidance that actually applies to your mouth.
Preventive Services
Our Preventive Dental Services
Dental Cleanings & Exams
The cornerstone of preventive care. We recommend two visits per year for most patients — more frequently for patients with a history of gum disease or high cavity risk. Both are included in our Smile Savings Plan.
Fluoride Treatment
A quick professional fluoride application at the end of your cleaning strengthens enamel and helps prevent cavities — especially important for children, patients with dry mouth, and anyone at elevated cavity risk. Included in the Smile Savings Plan.
Dental Sealants
Thin protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth — the deep pits and grooves where most cavities in children and teens develop. Quick, painless, and highly effective at preventing decay in high-risk areas.
Night Guards & Mouth Guards
Custom-fitted night guards protect teeth from the damage of nighttime grinding and clenching. Sports mouth guards provide critical protection for active patients and are far more effective than store-bought alternatives.
Periodontal (Gum) Care
For patients with early or established gum disease, we provide scaling and root planing — a deeper cleaning that removes bacteria and deposits from below the gumline to halt the progression of periodontal disease and protect the bone supporting your teeth.
Orthodontic Screening
At every preventive visit we evaluate alignment and bite development for younger patients. When orthodontic treatment is warranted, we refer patients directly to Elate Orthodontics — our sister practice with 1,000+ five-star reviews — right next door.
For Families
Preventive Care Starts Early
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child’s first dental visit by age one or when the first tooth appears. Early visits establish healthy habits, allow us to catch developmental concerns, and help kids build a positive relationship with dental care before any anxiety has a chance to develop.
At TFD, we make visits gentle, educational, and low-stress for kids. Fluoride, sealants, and growth monitoring are all part of our preventive approach for younger patients.
For Adults & Seniors
It’s Never Too Late to Get Back on Track
We see adults who haven’t been to a dentist in years — no judgment, just a thorough evaluation of where things stand and a realistic plan to address what needs attention. Preventive care for adults also means monitoring for systemic connections: gum disease is linked to heart disease, diabetes, and other conditions your physician may not be screening for.
For seniors, we pay particular attention to dry mouth (often medication-related), root surface cavities, and changes to existing restorations.

Common Questions
Preventive Dentistry FAQ
Twice a year is the standard recommendation for most patients. Patients with a history of gum disease, high cavity rates, or certain medical conditions may benefit from cleanings every 3 to 4 months. We make a personalized recommendation based on your specific history and risk profile.
Most PPO dental plans cover preventive services at 100% — cleanings, exams, and X-rays are often fully covered with no out-of-pocket cost. This is by design: insurers know that paying for preventive care costs far less than paying for the fillings, crowns, and root canals that result from skipping it.
Prophylaxis is the clinical term for a routine professional cleaning — the removal of plaque, tartar, and surface stains from the teeth to prevent gum disease and decay. It’s different from a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing), which is a therapeutic procedure for patients with active periodontal disease.
A comprehensive exam is a full-mouth evaluation typically done at a first visit — covering all teeth, restorations, gum tissue, bite, jaw, and screening for oral cancer. Routine recall exams are shorter interval checkups to monitor your ongoing dental health. Both are valuable and serve different purposes.
Yes — and this is one of the most important things to understand about dental health. Most problems, including cavities, gum disease, and even some oral cancers, are painless in their early stages. By the time something hurts, it has usually progressed significantly. Routine visits catch issues while treatment is still simple and affordable.
A routine cleaning and exam without insurance typically ranges from $150 to $300 depending on whether X-rays are taken. Our Smile Savings Plan includes two cleanings, two exams, fluoride, and full X-rays for $360 per year — making preventive care as affordable as possible for uninsured patients.

What Patients Are Saying
Frisco Families Trust Tribute Family Dentistry

— Frisco Parent, The Tribute
“I hadn’t been to the dentist in four years and was embarrassed to come in. The team was completely non-judgmental, did a thorough exam, and explained exactly what needed attention vs. what could wait. That honesty meant a lot.”
— Patient, Lone Star Ranch
“The Smile Savings Plan is a great deal for our family — we don’t have dental insurance and this makes it easy to keep everyone coming in twice a year without worrying about the cost of basic care.”
