Start With an Accurate Diagnosis
Every Symptom Has a Cause. We Find It Before We Treat It.
Most people come to the dentist because something is wrong — a tooth that aches, gums that bleed, a chip that wasn’t there yesterday, or a smile they’ve stopped feeling confident about. The symptom is what you notice. The cause is what determines the right treatment, and the two are not always obvious. A sensitive tooth can mean a small cavity or a cracked root. Bleeding gums can be early gingivitis or advanced periodontal disease. The difference changes everything about your care.
At Tribute Family Dentistry, we use 3D imaging, digital X-rays, and a careful clinical exam to diagnose the real source of the problem — not just quiet the symptom. This page is your guide to the dental problems we treat most often, organized by what you’re actually experiencing, with a direct link to the treatment for each. Whether it’s your toddler’s first cavity or your own overdue restorative work, you’ll get the same unhurried, honest evaluation.
Reliable patient resources we trust
We believe informed patients make better decisions about their care. For independent, professionally reviewed information on the conditions below, we point our patients to the American Dental Association’s consumer library and the CDC: ADA MouthHealthy A–Z and CDC Oral Health. Use them to learn more, then call us to find out what’s actually happening in your mouth.
Category 1 · Tooth Pain & Dental Emergencies
Tooth Pain, Trauma & Urgent Problems
Dental pain rarely improves on its own — and a small problem caught today is almost always easier and less expensive to treat than the same problem in two weeks. We hold time open for same-day emergency care and treat urgent issues for both new and existing patients.
Toothache & Throbbing Tooth Pain
Persistent or throbbing pain often signals decay reaching the nerve, an infection, or a cracked tooth. When the pulp is involved, a root canal relieves the pain and saves the tooth.
Chipped, Cracked or Broken Tooth
From a minor enamel chip to a fractured cusp, broken teeth are repairable. Small chips are smoothed or rebuilt with bonding; larger fractures are protected with a crown.
Knocked-Out or Dislodged Tooth
A knocked-out permanent tooth is a true emergency — the first hour matters most. Keep it moist and call us immediately for an emergency exam so we can attempt to save it.
Lost or Loose Filling or Crown
A filling or crown that falls out leaves the tooth exposed and vulnerable. We re-cement or replace crowns and renew fillings, usually quickly, to protect the tooth underneath.
Dental Abscess & Facial Swelling
Swelling, a gum pimple, or a bad taste can mean an abscessed (infected) tooth that needs urgent attention. Treatment usually combines drainage, antibiotics, and a root canal or extraction. Don’t wait on this one.
Wisdom Tooth Pain & Pressure
Aching at the back of the jaw, swelling, or crowding often points to impacted wisdom teeth. Removal with Dr. Roberts, who has performed thousands of extractions with IV sedation, is comfortable and predictable.
Category 2 · Decay, Damage & Missing Teeth
Tooth Decay, Damage & Tooth Loss
Tooth decay is one of the most common conditions in both children and adults — the CDC reports that 90% or more of adults have had cavities. Caught early, it’s a simple fix. Left alone, it leads to bigger restorative needs. We treat the full spectrum, from a first filling to replacing a missing tooth.
Cavities & Tooth Decay
A cavity won’t heal on its own, but a small one is quick to treat. We remove the decay and restore the tooth with a natural-looking, tooth-colored filling that blends seamlessly.
Sensitive Teeth (Hot, Cold & Sweet)
Sensitivity can come from worn enamel, a small cavity, gum recession, or a cracked tooth. We diagnose the cause and treat it — from preventive care and fluoride to a filling or crown when needed.
Worn, Cracked or Heavily Filled Teeth
Teeth weakened by large old fillings, grinding, or cracks need more than a patch. A custom crown caps and protects the whole tooth, restoring strength and natural appearance.
A Single Missing Tooth
One gap affects chewing, neighboring teeth, and the jawbone over time. A dental implant replaces the whole tooth permanently; a bridge is a proven alternative.
Several or All Missing Teeth
When multiple teeth are gone, we restore a full, functional smile with partial dentures, complete dentures, or implant-supported options tailored to your bite and goals.
Old, Failing or Dark Restorations
Aging silver fillings and worn dental work can crack teeth or hide new decay. Our restorative team replaces them with modern, tooth-colored materials that look and function better.
Category 3 · Gum & Soft-Tissue Conditions
Gum Disease, Bleeding & Bad Breath
Gum disease is the leading cause of adult tooth loss, and it’s often painless until it’s advanced. The good news: caught early, it’s very treatable — and managing it protects more than your smile, since gum health is linked to heart disease and diabetes control.
Bleeding or Swollen Gums
Gums that bleed when you brush or floss are a warning sign of gingivitis — the earliest, reversible stage of gum disease. A professional cleaning and improved home care often turn it around.
Receding Gums & Loose Teeth
Gums pulling away, longer-looking teeth, or any looseness can signal periodontitis affecting the bone. We treat it with deep cleaning (scaling & root planing) and ongoing maintenance.
Chronic Bad Breath (Halitosis)
Persistent bad breath that brushing won’t fix often traces back to gum disease, trapped bacteria, or dry mouth. We find the source and treat it with targeted periodontal therapy and cleanings.
Routine Prevention & Oral Cancer Screening
The best treatment is catching problems before they start. Every preventive visit includes an exam, cleaning, X-rays as needed, and an oral cancer screening to keep your whole mouth healthy.
Category 4 · Bite, Grinding & Jaw Conditions
Grinding, Jaw Pain & Misaligned Teeth
How your teeth come together affects comfort, wear, and long-term stability. Grinding, clenching, jaw tension, and crowding are common — and very manageable once the cause is identified.
Teeth Grinding & Clenching (Bruxism)
Worn, flattened, or chipped teeth and morning jaw soreness often point to nighttime grinding. A custom night guard protects your teeth and eases the strain while you sleep.
Jaw Pain, Clicking & TMJ Discomfort
Jaw pain, popping, clicking, and tension headaches can stem from a strained jaw joint, often driven by clenching. We evaluate your bite and provide custom appliance therapy to relieve it.
Crooked, Crowded or Gapped Teeth
Misaligned teeth are harder to clean and can wear unevenly. As a practice founded by a board-certified orthodontist, we offer Invisalign clear aligners to straighten discreetly.
Protecting Teeth During Sports
Athletes of any age should guard against dental trauma. A custom sports mouth guard fits better and protects more reliably than a store-bought version.
Category 5 · Cosmetic Concerns
The Look of Your Smile
Not every concern is painful — sometimes it’s simply that you’ve stopped smiling freely. Cosmetic dentistry is conservative and customized, and a confident smile is its own kind of dental health.
Stained or Yellowing Teeth
Coffee, age, and everyday wear dull your smile. Professional-strength take-home whitening delivers brighter, longer-lasting results than store-bought kits, safely and on your schedule.
Chipped, Uneven or Misshapen Teeth
Small imperfections are often fixed in a single visit. Composite bonding reshapes teeth without removing enamel; non-invasive veneers transform the whole smile.
I Want a Full Smile Makeover
If you’d change several things at once, a coordinated plan delivers the best result. Our cosmetic dentistry combines whitening, bonding, veneers, and restorations into one cohesive smile design.
Gaps You’d Rather Not Have
Spacing between teeth can be closed cosmetically with bonding or veneers, or corrected with clear aligners when the bite is involved. We’ll help you choose the right path.
Category 6 · Children & Teens
Kids’ & Teen Dental Concerns
From a baby’s first tooth through the teen years, children’s dental needs change quickly. We’re a mom-approved practice that makes young patients feel comfortable while preventing problems before they grow.
Cavities in Baby Teeth & First Visits
Baby teeth matter — decay in them affects comfort, eating, and the permanent teeth forming underneath. We see children starting at age one with gentle, kid-friendly children’s dentistry.
Protecting Young Teeth from Decay
Two of the most effective tools we have are dental sealants and fluoride treatment — simple, painless, and proven to dramatically cut a child’s risk of cavities.
Teen Dental Needs
The teen years bring wisdom-tooth monitoring, cavity risk during orthodontics, and sports protection. Our teen dentistry keeps growing smiles on track through a busy stage of life.
Nervous or Anxious Young Patients
A calm first experience shapes a lifetime of dental health. Our team lets kids explore at their own pace, and TV at every chair keeps them relaxed. See how we approach patient comfort.
Why an Experienced Diagnosis Matters
Many dental symptoms have more than one possible cause, and the wrong assumption leads to the wrong treatment. A sensitive tooth treated as simple sensitivity — when it’s actually a hairline crack — only gets worse. That’s why we invest in accurate diagnosis first: 3D imaging, digital X-rays, intraoral photos, and a thorough exam, all explained to you in plain language using your own images.
What sets our diagnostic process apart
- Comprehensive records — 3D imaging, digital X-rays, and clinical photos — so nothing is missed
- We identify the true cause of your symptom, not just the symptom itself
- Honest options explained clearly, including when watchful waiting is the right call
- Whole-family care under one roof, from a child’s first visit to advanced restorative work
- Same-day appointments for emergencies and urgent problems whenever possible
