The Dental Visit That Sets the Tone for a Lifetime
A child’s early dental experiences shape how they feel about dental care for the rest of their life. Our goal at every children’s cleaning is simple: leave your child feeling confident, comfortable, and genuinely okay with coming back. No fear. No rushing. No drama. Just gentle, thorough care and a team that knows how to talk to kids.
At Tribute Family Dentistry, we see children from their very first visit through their teen years, building a relationship that makes dental care a normal, positive part of their lives. We serve families from The Tribute, Lone Star Ranch, Phillips Creek Ranch, Frisco Lakes, The Colony, and Little Elm.
What a Children’s Cleaning Includes
Using small, child-sized instruments, our hygienists carefully remove plaque and any tartar buildup from your child’s teeth — paying close attention to the back molars where most childhood cavities develop.
Teeth are polished with a flavored paste your child can often choose — a small thing that makes a real difference in how they feel about the visit. This removes surface staining and leaves teeth smooth and clean.
Our dentist examines every tooth for early signs of decay, checks the bite and spacing, and monitors development milestones. Digital X-rays are taken as clinically appropriate — typically once a year for most children.
A professional fluoride application at the end of the cleaning strengthens developing enamel and provides extra protection against cavities. Particularly important for children in their cavity-prone years.
We monitor incoming adult teeth, spacing, and jaw development at every visit. When orthodontic concerns arise, we coordinate directly with Elate Orthodontics next door for early evaluation.
Before you leave, we share what we found, flag anything worth monitoring, and give you practical home care guidance — brushing technique, flossing age, diet tips, and anything specific to your child’s teeth.
When Should My Child First Come In?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child’s first dental visit by age one — or within 6 months of the first tooth coming in. Starting early gives us a baseline, lets us monitor development from the beginning, and most importantly, gets your child comfortable with dental visits before any anxiety has time to build.
After the first visit, cleanings are recommended every 6 months for most children — the same as adults. Some children with higher cavity risk may benefit from more frequent visits, which we’ll discuss with you based on what we see.
Why Baby Teeth Matter
Baby teeth hold space for adult teeth — premature loss causes crowding and alignment problems
They are essential for chewing, speech development, and confidence
Untreated decay in baby teeth can spread to the developing adult teeth beneath
Infections from untreated cavities can cause pain, missed school, and more complex treatment
Early positive dental experiences are one of the best investments in your child’s lifelong oral health
What If My Child Is Nervous?
Dental anxiety in children is completely normal — and our team is experienced in helping kids work through it. Here’s how we approach nervous patients:
We explain what we’re going to do in kid-friendly language, show them the tools, and then gently proceed. No surprises.
We never rush a nervous child. If they need a break, we take one. Building trust is more important than getting through a checklist.
TV and headphones are available during treatment. Keeping little minds occupied makes a big difference in how kids experience their visit.
We celebrate every win. Kids who are praised and encouraged leave feeling proud of themselves — and want to come back.
If your child has significant dental anxiety or has had a difficult experience elsewhere, call us at (469) 598-1021 before scheduling. We’ll talk through the best approach before the appointment so everyone is set up for a good visit.
Common Questions
Children’s Cleaning FAQ
Yes. Baby teeth are susceptible to decay just like adult teeth, and cavities in baby teeth can spread, cause pain, and affect the developing adult teeth beneath. Regular cleanings remove what home brushing misses and allow us to catch problems early when they’re easiest to treat.
Cavities can develop as early as age 2 to 3. The back baby molars — which erupt around age 1 to 2 — are particularly cavity-prone because of their deep grooves. Sealants are one of the most effective preventive tools for these teeth once they erupt.
Yes, in most cases. Leaving cavities untreated — even in baby teeth — can lead to pain, abscess, and damage to the adult teeth developing below. The size and depth of the cavity and how long the baby tooth will remain determine the best approach, which we discuss with you before any treatment.
Not at all. Cavities are influenced by diet, genetics, bacteria levels, saliva composition, and oral hygiene — most of which parents have only partial control over. Some children are simply more cavity-prone than others. Our job is to help you manage it, not to assign blame.
Children’s cleanings typically range from $75 to $150 depending on whether X-rays or fluoride are included. Most PPO dental plans cover children’s preventive care at 100%. For families without insurance, our Smile Savings Plan provides 20% off and includes preventive services.
White or chalky spots on teeth are often the earliest sign of decay. Brown or dark spots, visible holes, sensitivity to sweets or cold, and toothache all indicate decay has progressed. If you notice any of these, call us — earlier is always better when it comes to children’s cavities.
Our Team Loves Seeing Kids
Our hygienists and dentists genuinely enjoy working with children — from curious toddlers to eye-rolling teenagers. We know how to meet kids where they are, make them laugh, and get through an appointment in a way that leaves them feeling good about coming back. Parents frequently tell us their child actually looks forward to dental visits here, which is exactly the outcome we aim for.

What Parents Are Saying
Frisco Families Trust Tribute Family Dentistry
“My 4-year-old was terrified of the dentist after a bad experience elsewhere. The team here was incredibly patient — they showed her every tool before using it and let her hold some of them. She left saying she wants to come back. I nearly cried.”
— Frisco Parent, The Tribute
“We bring all three of our kids here. The hygienists are amazing — they make the cleaning fun and always take the time to explain what they’re doing in a way the kids understand. Our 7-year-old actually reminds us when his cleaning is coming up.”
— Frisco Parent, Lone Star Ranch
“My daughter has sensory sensitivities and dental visits used to be really difficult. This team took the time to understand her needs before we even came in and adjusted everything accordingly. It was the most successful dental visit she’s ever had.”
