Root Canals Have an Undeserved Reputation
The fear around root canals comes from an era when dental anesthesia and techniques were far less advanced. Today, a root canal performed with modern anesthesia and instruments is no more uncomfortable than getting a filling — and it provides immediate relief from the acute pain of an infected nerve. The procedure that people dread is actually the thing that ends the pain.
At Tribute Family Dentistry, we perform root canal treatment in a single or two-visit process, using digital X-rays and precise technique to save your natural tooth and restore it to full function. We serve patients from The Tribute, Lone Star Ranch, Phillips Creek Ranch, Frisco Lakes, The Colony, and Little Elm.
What Is a Root Canal?
Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp — a network of nerves and blood vessels that nourishes the tooth during development. When decay, a crack, or repeated dental procedures allow bacteria to reach the pulp, it becomes infected and inflamed, causing significant pain.
Root canal treatment removes the infected pulp, carefully cleans and disinfects the canals inside the root, then fills and seals them to prevent reinfection. The tooth is then restored with a crown to protect it and return it to full chewing function. Once treated, the tooth can last decades — often a lifetime.
Signs You May Need a Root Canal
Severe, persistent, or throbbing tooth pain
Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the stimulus is removed
Swelling or tenderness in the gums near a tooth
Darkening or discoloration of a tooth
A pimple-like bump on the gum (dental fistula) near the tooth
Pain when biting or chewing on a specific tooth
A tooth that has had repeated dental procedures or large fillings
Step by Step
What Happens During a Root Canal
Exam & X-Rays
Digital X-rays confirm the extent of infection and allow us to map the root canal anatomy before starting treatment.
Local Anesthesia
The tooth and surrounding area are fully numbed. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the procedure feels once anesthesia takes effect.
Pulp Removal
A small opening is made in the crown of the tooth. The infected pulp is carefully removed from the pulp chamber and each root canal.
Cleaning & Sealing
The canals are shaped, disinfected, and filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha to seal them against future infection.
Crown Placement
A porcelain crown is placed over the tooth to protect it and restore full biting strength. This is essential for back teeth especially.
Root Canal vs. Extraction — Which Is Right?
- Saves your natural tooth
- Maintains bone density in the jaw
- Prevents adjacent teeth from shifting
- No gap in your smile
- Restored tooth functions like natural
- Can last 10 to 20+ years with proper care
- Lower upfront cost
- Necessary when tooth is beyond saving
- Bone loss begins after extraction
- Adjacent teeth may drift over time
- Replacement (implant, bridge) adds significant cost later
- Total long-term cost often exceeds root canal + crown
We always aim to save natural teeth when it is clinically appropriate. If a tooth can be treated with a root canal and has good long-term prognosis, we will recommend that over extraction. When extraction is the right call, we will explain clearly why and discuss implant or bridge options for replacing the tooth.

Common Questions
Root Canal FAQ
The procedure itself should not hurt — the area is fully numbed with local anesthesia before we start. What patients feel is pressure, not pain. Some tenderness in the surrounding tissue is normal for a few days after treatment and resolves quickly. The relief from the pre-treatment pain is almost immediate.
For back teeth (molars and premolars) — yes, a crown is strongly recommended. Root-treated teeth become more brittle over time and are at risk of fracturing under chewing forces without a crown. Front teeth with minimal structural damage may sometimes be restored with a filling instead, but we evaluate case by case.
Most root canals are completed in one appointment lasting 60 to 90 minutes. More complex cases — particularly molars with multiple or curved canals — may require a second visit. We’ll give you a realistic timeline at your exam.
With a properly placed crown and good oral hygiene, root canal treatment can last 10 to 20 years or more — often a lifetime. The crown is the key to long-term success. A root-treated tooth without a crown is significantly more likely to fracture and fail.
For routine root canal cases, a general dentist is fully qualified. We refer to an endodontist for complex cases — calcified canals, retreatments, or anatomically unusual roots where specialist expertise reduces risk. We’ll always be upfront if your case warrants a referral.
The infection inside the tooth will not resolve on its own. Without treatment, it spreads — to the bone, to adjacent teeth, potentially beyond. An abscess can become a serious medical emergency. Antibiotics buy time but do not cure a pulp infection. The tooth will eventually need extraction if left untreated.
