Restorative & Emergency Dentistry — Frisco TX
We Always Try to Save the Tooth First
Tooth extraction is sometimes the right clinical decision — but it is never our first recommendation. At Tribute Family Dentistry, we evaluate every case carefully and only recommend extraction when a tooth is too damaged, infected, or structurally compromised to be saved. When extraction is necessary, we perform it with precision, proper anesthesia, and a clear aftercare plan so you recover comfortably and know exactly what comes next.
We offer both simple and surgical extractions at our Frisco office, with IV sedation available for complex cases through Dr. David Roberts. We serve patients from The Tribute, Lone Star Ranch, Phillips Creek Ranch, Frisco Lakes, The Colony, and Little Elm.
Types of Extractions We Perform
Simple Extractions
A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that is visible above the gumline and can be loosened and removed in one piece without surgical intervention. Local anesthetic numbs the area completely — most patients feel pressure but no pain. Simple extractions are quick, typically 20 to 40 minutes, and recovery is straightforward.
Cost: $100 to $300 per tooth depending on complexity.
Surgical Extractions
A surgical extraction is needed when a tooth is impacted beneath the gumline, broken off at the gumline, or has roots that are curved or fused to the bone. A small incision is made in the gum, and the tooth may be sectioned into pieces for easier removal. IV sedation is available for surgical cases through Dr. David Roberts.
Cost: $250 to $600+ per tooth depending on complexity.
Wisdom Teeth Extractions
Wisdom teeth are the most common extraction case we see. Both simple erupted wisdom teeth and impacted surgical cases are handled at our office by Dr. David Roberts — a GP with 35+ years of surgical experience and IV sedation capability. No referral to a separate oral surgery center needed.
When Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary?
Severe Decay or Infection
When decay has destroyed too much of the tooth structure or infection has spread beyond what a root canal can address, extraction removes the source of the problem and stops further spread.
Broken or Fractured Below the Gumline
A tooth that has fractured at or below the gumline often cannot be restored with a crown. Extraction prevents infection and clears the way for a replacement option.
Advanced Gum Disease
Periodontal disease that has caused severe bone loss can loosen teeth to the point where they can no longer be retained. Extraction and replacement prevent further bone deterioration.
Impacted Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth that are trapped beneath the gumline or growing at an angle can damage adjacent teeth, cause crowding, or develop painful infections. Proactive removal prevents these complications.
Orthodontic Treatment Planning
In some orthodontic cases, one or more teeth need to be removed to create the space required for proper alignment. We coordinate with Elate Orthodontics for planned extraction cases.
Recovery & Aftercare
Most patients recover comfortably within 7 to 10 days following a simple extraction. Surgical extractions and wisdom teeth removal may take slightly longer. We provide detailed written aftercare instructions at every extraction appointment.
Days 1 to 3
Bite on gauze for 30 to 45 minutes to control bleeding. Apply cold compress in 20-minute intervals. Rest, take prescribed or OTC pain medication, eat soft foods, and avoid straws.
Days 4 to 7
Swelling and tenderness subside significantly. Begin gentle saltwater rinses (after 24 hours). Most patients return to normal activity by day 3 to 5 for simple extractions.
Week 2 and Beyond
Gum tissue closes over the socket. Full bone healing takes several weeks but is largely uneventful. The white tissue forming in the socket is normal granulation tissue — not infection.
Avoiding Dry Socket
Dry socket occurs when the blood clot that forms in the extraction site is dislodged before healing is complete, exposing the bone and causing significant pain. It is the most common post-extraction complication. To avoid it:
No straws for at least 5 days — suction dislodges the clot
No smoking — nicotine impairs healing and suction loosens the clot
No vigorous rinsing for the first 24 hours
Avoid hard, crunchy, or chewy foods near the extraction site
If you suspect dry socket
Call us immediately at (469) 598-1021. We’ll clean the socket and apply a medicated dressing that relieves pain quickly. Do not try to treat it at home.
After Extraction
Replacing the Tooth
Leaving a gap after extraction causes bone loss at the site and allows adjacent teeth to drift over time — which can create bite problems and make future replacement more complex. We always discuss tooth replacement options as part of extraction planning:
Dental Implants
The gold standard for tooth replacement. A titanium post placed in the jaw supports a natural-looking crown. Preserves bone and lasts a lifetime with proper care.
Dental Bridge
A fixed replacement that spans the gap using adjacent teeth as anchors. A good option when implant placement is not appropriate.
Partial Denture
A removable option when multiple teeth are missing or implants aren’t feasible. Cost-effective and functional.
Complete Dentures
When most or all teeth in an arch require extraction, a full denture restores function and appearance. Often planned in coordination with the extraction timeline.
Common Questions
Dental Extraction FAQ
Does a tooth extraction hurt?
Not during the procedure. The area is fully numbed with local anesthetic. You will feel pressure as the tooth is loosened but not sharp pain. Some tenderness and soreness for a few days after is normal and manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Why is day 3 often the worst after an extraction?
Post-surgical inflammation peaks around 48 to 72 hours after a procedure. Day 3 often feels harder than day 1. This is a normal part of the healing process and resolves quickly — most patients feel significantly better by day 5.
What is the white stuff in my extraction socket?
It is almost certainly granulation tissue — a normal, healthy part of the healing process. The body forms this tissue to fill and close the socket. It looks white or yellowish and is not pus or infection. If you have significant pain alongside it, call us to rule out dry socket.
Can you do an extraction the same day I come in?
Yes — for most simple and many surgical extractions, we can treat the same day after an exam and X-ray. Emergency same-day extractions are available for patients in acute pain. Complex surgical cases may be scheduled with Dr. Roberts on a specific day.
Is it better to extract or do a root canal?
When the tooth can be saved, a root canal and crown is almost always the better long-term choice — it preserves the natural tooth, maintains bone density, and prevents adjacent teeth from shifting. Extraction costs less upfront but typically leads to higher costs for replacement down the road.
How much does a tooth extraction cost in Frisco?
Simple extractions typically range from $100 to $300. Surgical extractions range from $250 to $600 or more. Most PPO dental insurance plans cover extractions in part. We’ll provide a clear quote after examining you — no surprises before we start.
